Material is pleased to present
its sixth exhibition of 2008: Niki Johnson and Melissa Farris: Moral Fiber.
The exhibition will open with a reception for the artist on Friday, August
1 from 6-8 pm. The exhibition will run through August 29.
Niki Johnson and Melissa Farris collaboratively present Moral Fiber, an
exhibition that stitches together traditional women’s media with
pointed socio-political commentary. The exhibition will feature large-scale
appliquéd portraiture as well as miniature cross-stitch studies
that investigate the ironic relationships between American morality and
the media. This body of work continues both Johnson and Farris’ individual
dialogs concerning cultural ideologies while uniting the two under the
genre of domestic craft.
Both artists are recent BFA graduates of the University of Memphis. Johnson
and Farris have shown regionally and nationally. Melissa Farris was the
recipient of Lantana’s Class of ’07 “Most Popular Award” for
her oil painting Jonathon and Bo, depicting two men making out on a couch.
Niki Johnson has won the Undergraduate Award in the last two consecutive
Annual Juried Student Exhibitions at AMUM. Moral Fiber is the first of
several exhibitions the duo are organizing through next spring.
Material is located at 2553 Broad Avenue. Parking is available on both the north
and south sides of Broad Avenue.
